Introduction
Phillip Roberts is a Welsh photographer working in black & white and colour, across analogue and digital formats. His practice has moved from studio and architectural commissions toward a personal body of work centred on coastline, still life and the found detail — vintage machinery, worn surfaces, the geometry of doorways and thresholds. He is currently based in the Vale of Glamorgan.
Photographer’s Story
I have been making photographs for more than forty years, but my relationship with photography has gradually become quieter and more reflective over time.
Much of my work now centres on the landscapes of the UK and Europe, particularly the coastline where light, weather and the movement of the sea continually reshape the environment. I’m drawn to the small details that are often overlooked — textures in rock, patterns in sand, traces left by water or wind.
I work in both black & white and colour and use a mixture of digital and analogue cameras in various formats, from 35mm and medium format film to large-format cameras. The slower process of working this way encourages patience and careful observation, allowing the image to reveal itself gradually rather than being forced.
For me, photography is as much about the experience of being present in a place as it is about the final image. Each photograph becomes a quiet record of that moment — a small fragment of time held in the landscape.
